Seven Inputs for an EMD Purchase Dossier in AA and AAA Carbon-Zinc Production
A procurement checklist for buyers qualifying a manganese dioxide supplier
AA and AAA are sizes, not purchasing specifications. Seven inputs turn an EMD inquiry into a comparable offer and, later, into the acceptance record for the first lot: battery model, target market, current formulation, production status, test method, monthly demand and validation process. Most buyers send two or three of them and then wonder why quotations arrive on different bases. Send all seven in one document and the supplier can quote against your cell, your market and your volume, while you gain a written basis for rejecting a lot that does not match.

The seven inputs at a glance
| Input | What to put in the dossier | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Battery model | IEC designation such as R6S, R6P or R03, the test you must pass, and any label claim | Sets the discharge duty and the shelf claim the material must support |
| Target market | Destination country, customer specification, restricted-substance and labeling rules, document language | Decides which declarations and limits belong in the contract |
| Current formulation | Electrolyte system, EMD share, blend partners, carbon and binder levels, cathode density | Shows whether a grade change is a drop-in or a re-qualification |
| Production status | New line or existing, trial or serial, mixer and feeder type, current scrap and failure mode | Tells the supplier whether to match a running process or propose a window |
| Test method | Load, duty cycle, end voltage, temperature, sample size, conditioning, fresh and stored checks | Makes supplier numbers comparable and fixes the acceptance test |
| Monthly demand | Average and peak tonnage, lot size, packaging, storage conditions, buffer stock | Sets the order pattern, lot traceability and continuity plan |
| Validation process | Gate sequence, pass criteria, sign-off owner, change-control rule | Stops a sample approval from drifting into an uncontrolled bulk order |
Battery model: a size is not a specification
Under IEC 60086 the same can carries R6 or R03, and the suffix changes the obligation: S for standard, P for high power, C for high capacity. State the designation you build, the clause or customer test you must pass, and the shelf claim printed on the pack. An R6P built for a motorised toy loads the cathode differently from an R6S built for a clock, so one powder can pass the first duty and fail the second. Put the designation and the target test in the dossier instead of the phrase carbon zinc.
Target market: the compliance filter
Market decides documentation before it decides chemistry. Name the destination country, the customer specification and the restricted-substance, labeling and language requirements that apply. A retail brand may need declarations, a conformity statement and a defined shelf-life claim; an industrial buyer may care only about discharge and leakage. Ask which declarations the supplier can issue, in which language, and whether they cover the exact grade and production site. A certificate written for a different grade is not evidence for this order.
Current formulation: send ranges, not a nominal
State the electrolyte system, because ammonium chloride and zinc chloride cells buffer differently and place different demands on the powder. Then give the EMD share and any blend partner: natural manganese dioxide, chemical manganese dioxide, or a lower-cost discharge powder. Add carbon and binder levels and the cathode density you run. Ranges are more useful than one nominal figure, because the supplier needs to know how much movement the recipe allows. Attach the last three COAs from the material in use, so a new offer can be compared on the same lines.
Production status: trial, serial, or new line
Say whether the cell is in serial production, in a trial, or on a line still being commissioned. A running line has an established mixer, feeder and press, and the powder has to fit them; a new line can be tuned to the material. Include the current scrap rate and the dominant failure mode, whether that is low discharge, leakage, weight variation or paste viscosity. That history shows which specification line deserves the tightest limit, and whether a grade change needs a full re-qualification or only a confirmation run.
Test method: fix the protocol before comparing numbers
A discharge time is a result under one configuration. Fix the load, duty cycle, end voltage, temperature, sample size and conditioning before any supplier figure is compared. If the cell is sold as IEC compliant, name the application test; if a customer specification governs, attach it in full. Require fresh-cell and stored-cell results on the same protocol, because a shelf claim cannot be supported by fresh data alone. Treat supplier internal data as screening, and make your own test the acceptance test.
Monthly demand: turn tonnage into an order pattern
Give an average month and a peak month, not one annual figure. Add the lot size you can consume, the packaging format, the storage humidity and temperature, and the buffer you keep. Those numbers decide how many production lots you receive per year, whether lot-to-lot variation is a real risk, and whether a consistent grade can be held across the year. If demand is seasonal, say so, because a supplier planning against a flat forecast will disappoint you in the peak month.
Validation process: make each gate explicit
A sample approval is not a supply approval. Write the sequence down and give every gate a pass criterion and a named owner.
- Document review: specification, TDS, SDS and batch-specific COA with test methods.
- Sample: two production lots plus a retained reference from each, with written confirmation that bulk will follow the same route.
- Laboratory cell build: your recipe, your protocol, a control arm on current material.
- Line trial: production tooling, agreed run size, scrap and leakage counted.
- Release: customer or regulatory sign-off, then bulk release under change control.
Decide in advance what happens if the line trial passes but the stored-cell check fails, and whether a change of ore source or production route triggers a new trial. That rule is the part most purchase files leave out.
The inputs buyers most often leave out
Battery model, formulation and test method usually reach the supplier. The other four often do not, and each gap has a cost. Without the target market, declarations are scoped after the sample is approved. Without production status, a grade is proposed for a process that does not exist yet. Without monthly demand, lot size and continuity are guessed, and a seasonal peak exposes the guess. Without a validation sequence, a sample approval becomes a bulk order with no gate in between.
Send the dossier, not a one-line inquiry
Put the seven inputs in one document and send it through our contact page. The Qingchong EMD product page carries the technical table with TDS, SDS and COA downloads, and the support section covers samples, packaging and order terms. For a zinc-carbon cathode where cost drives the decision, compare the discharge manganese powder route on the same dossier.
FAQ
Can we request a price with only some of the seven inputs?
You can ask for an indicative price, but you cannot compare offers. The minimum for a comparable quotation is battery model, formulation, test method and monthly demand. Market and validation detail should follow before a sample order.
Does the target market change the EMD specification?
It changes the documentation and the limits you must evidence, and sometimes the shelf claim. Name the market and the customer specification so declarations and restricted-substance limits are scoped to the grade and the production site you are actually buying.
How much sample should we request?
Enough for a laboratory cell build under your recipe, plus a retained reference, drawn from two production lots. Confirm in writing that the sample and the bulk order share one production route, and agree the pass criteria before the sample ships.
What if our production is still in trial?
Say so. A trial line can be tuned to the powder, so the supplier can propose a grade and a process window rather than match an existing recipe. Fix the test protocol early, because trial results are only comparable under one protocol.
